R-Planet was one of the first in its class: a blockchain game that allowed the staking of many other projects’ NFTs to earn a tradeable token. At its peak, there were whales clearing inordinate amounts of $AETHER on a daily basis and — at least in principle — making a small fortune in the process.

Then, the R-Planet spaceship flew into a rough asteroid belt. Whales began taking profits, and given just how rich in Aether these people were, it was a cause for concern. As one player mentioned to me, “[the whale] had so much Aether he could have flooded the book every day.”

This was then compounded by some changes the R-Planet developers implemented, resulting in ways to make gargantuan hauls of the token through crafting and rigs, which snowballed and caused hyperinflation, crashing the game’s economy.

It was a real shame, R-Planet was something of a treasure in the WAX gaming space. Its economy was innovative and the concept of putting your idle NFTs to work for passive income is likely to hang around. But, can R-Planet recover from this hit?

Is This ‘Big Update’ R-Planet’s Last Chance Saloon?

I want to start with some praise. I have written several times about rug pulls — and R-Planet has shown zero evidence it is one or ever will be — but also, my regular readers will know I coined “rug slip” and tried to jam it into the crypto vernacular. For a full breakdown via the story of Crypto Mines, click here, but the overview is this: it’s a game that collapses but through developer error, not malicious intent.

When R-Planet’s economy experienced hyperinflation, it wouldn’t have been unthinkable for the developers, WECAN, to pull support for the project and focus on their two other titles, Prospectors and Tribal Books. But they didn’t. Whether they succeed in this economic resurrection or not, I appreciate the accountability and resilience shown.

Whether they can recover with this major game update is hard to say, particularly as someone who hasn’t dumped a whole lot of hours into R-Planet. The footnotes of what is to come are that they are adding a staking hub, the R-Planet DAO, its DAO token $RDAO, RDAO auctions, and metafarming. Unpacking the dynamics and mechanics of all of these is way too long and in places, I’m not certain I even fully understand, so read their comprehensive explanation.

There are a lot of positives in this update and I suspect it has taken a glut of hours to build. Nevertheless, the post does outline a few elements that its players will probably react poorly to. First and foremost is the heavy reduction in mining yield, which the developers said they’d never do.

In fairness, they are well aware they’ll come under fire for this, but state “it’s a necessary change that must be made to ensure the sustainability of the tokenomics moving forward into the next phase of the game.” If that turns out to be the case, or can even go a ways to reversing the collapse of the economy, then I suspect all will be forgiven.

The second (probable) bone of contention is the Claim Limit on mined Aether which will bottleneck how much you can withdraw to your account, regardless of how much you mined (i.e, it’s not a percentage cap.) This has the potential to smooth out the economy, perhaps, and would stop people immediately drawing down large hauls to swap for WAX, if that is something that commonly occurs. Regardless, I can’t imagine it will be well received that there is a new limit on how much you can withdraw of the Aether you mined.

Final Thoughts

I would like to see R-Planet return to its former glory. There were mistakes made that led to the nosedive of its token, but they don’t seem to have been as a result of greed or malicious intent. The developers have poured a lot of effort into this update and it would be a strong positive for R-Planet, WECAN, the players, and the WAX ecosystem if it puts the game back on the right path.

There is one other piece to the R-Planet puzzle that didn’t really fit anywhere else: R-Planet Conquest. It’s a new game that will be a part of the R-Planet metaverse, but as there is no in-game footage, I’m not going to make any comments about it, just acknowledge that there is another arm of the project that could become relevant to R-Planet’s revival.

This week, I have found myself frequently opening the Gunfire Hero app to play. This traditional side-scroll shooter-type game has challenged me as I’ve struggled to progress through it. Though difficult, I have found it rewarding and addicting. That being said, let’s get into some of the details of the game.

Gunfire Hero is the second game in the Step Hero multiverse, the first being Step Hero itself. STEP and HERO Tokens are shared between games, but at this point, it doesn’t look like NFTs are. The tokens are built on Binance Smart Chain with plans to become multi-chain in the future. Currently, Gunfire Hero is only available on Android devices.

Gameplay

The good news for those of you who are hesitant to commit to Blockchain games is that this one is completely free to play. You can jump right into the action and try it out for yourself, with no entry cost.

In Gunfire Hero, you take the role of the hero as you fight to clear different rooms and progress through different worlds. To pass each room you must dodge bullets, rockets, and even turtles with shotguns while your hero autofires back. When you have successfully cleared the room, you will auto collect any loot that you’ve earned (gear, STEP tokens, and crafting materials). Gear and material drops are pretty rare, but I find myself collecting a few STEP tokens at the end of each life.

On completion of each room, you will also gain experience that will periodically level up your hero. On each level, you will be given the chance to select one of three different perks offered to you. Choose wisely! All perks are good, but some are better than others. My personal favorites are double bullets and bouncing bullets. You will also come across Angel levels every so often that will grant you a free perk.

Within each world are a number of boss levels as well. These bosses are more difficult to beat, but also often reward you with better drops and health when defeated. If you are unable to beat any level, then your progress will be reset for that world, including any perks chosen, and you will start back at the first room of that world the next time you play.

If you manage to beat the eight worlds that are currently in the game, there is an endless world that will pull random levels from each of the previous eight for you to fight.

To encourage your progress, each world also has three milestones, and once reached, reward you with STEP tokens, gear, and energy.

If you are having difficulty progressing past a world, you can spend your HERO tokens on leveling up talents on the “Talent” page. There are twelve different talents that can be permanently upgraded (randomly). These range from extra damage, to better shields, to more health, etc. Remember that these do not get reset, so don’t worry about losing them if you don’t get past a level.

You can also equip gear and level up your hero on the “Loadout” page. Gear can greatly help you in battle. The four gear slots available are weapons, armor, glasses, and bullets. Each piece of gear will boost your stats in different ways to help you beat your enemies easier. If you acquire three of the same type of gear, you can merge them to upgrade the rarity. You can also level up your gear using STEP tokens and gear materials dropped in-game. Your hero is leveled up using hero materials and STEP tokens.

Hero materials currently only drop from the “Weekly Events”. These events rotate each day. Monday through Thursday events drop different hero materials, while Friday through Sunday events drop STEP coins. You can choose between easy, normal, hard, and nightmare difficulty each day, with the more challenging difficulties granting better prizes.

Play to Earn

While this game is Play-to-Earn (P2E), there currently are two roadblocks.

  1. The first roadblock is that you must pass world seven before being able to cash out both your STEP tokens, as well as any gear you have acquired (NFTs).
  2. The second roadblock is that you can only cash out during select times the developers allow, which are announced on their social channels.

While the world seven roadblock is challenging to get by, it does prevent easy farming of STEP tokens which would deflate the value of the token. Ultimately this seems like a good way to encourage committed players and discourage farming. I am also hopeful that as the game progresses, withdrawal windows will be more frequent or all the time. I think this is also an important step for the lasting health of the game.

Marketplace

Gunfire Hero does have an online marketplace if you are looking to buy some gear, heroes, or crafting materials. The marketplace uses the HERO token, and requires you to log in using either Metamask or Wallet Connect. You can also list the NFTs that you have earned in-game for sale in the marketplace for other players to buy. Remember that you will need to withdraw them from the game first, which is currently only available during certain times.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think Gunfire Hero is worth a shot. It is surprisingly addicting and challenging, and will keep your hero on their toes as they dodge everything the enemy has to throw at them. I have really enjoyed trying to master the game and learning the strategy behind each perk you can choose. I am also hopeful that the Play-to-Earn aspect will be worth it for the time spent in-game.

Now that you have read the basics of Gunfire Hero, make sure to check it out, and let us know what you think of it in our Discord channel. Have fun!

The integration of NFTs into mainstream culture has been met with either devout acceptance or unfettered derision. In fact, some companies dip their toe in the waters and then promptly defecate everywhere and hurry back to web2. Well, of all people, the Olympics has unapologetically got involved.

I’m not sure what surprises me more, an officially licensed Play to Earn (P2E) game with NFTs for the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, or that the NFT detractors aren’t having collective apoplexy. Whatever the case, we have a new P2E game to discuss and I have no earthly idea how it has flown under the radar.

Olympic Games Jam: Beijing 2022

Although the game is unexpected, there are some familiar names behind the project to those of us in the space. The game has been developed by nWay for nWayPlay which is a “platform for competitive multiplayer games with play-to-earn features using NFTs.” The more familiar name, however, is Animoca Brands who appear to be on a mission to become completely ubiquitous within blockchain gaming, and nWay is a subsidiary of them.

Olympic Games Jam is a competitive game where you join 15-19 other players to compete in various Winter Games events. These arcade-style matches reward the winners with digital NFT pins among other spoils.

Key Takeaways

  • Officially licensed product by the Olympics
  • Competitive: rewards only given to highest placed finishers
  • Play to Earn through NFT rewards, boxes, and its own token (not yet available on DEX)
  • On Binance Smart Chain blockchain.
  • Substantial roadmap with more content, NFTs, events, and progression

There appear to be only two problems I have been able to find: firstly, the overlords at Apple are gatekeeping the app. Many developers (ourselves included) have battled with Apple over (even the mention of) NFTs within an app on their store. It appears no one is impervious to that and despite many outlets reporting Olympics Games Jam as being available on iOS, it is currently only on Android.

The second issue is the bizarre lack of exposure. Players are reporting that they cannot fill lobbies with 20 players, which is simply down to a lack of awareness for the project. The game launched on 3rd February and it took me until the 7th to hear about it! Perhaps we can help to remedy that!

As the blockchain gaming industry expands in all directions, we are finally able to be a little more selective over the projects we choose to cover. Generally, that means I want games with high-end gameplay or innovative uses of blockchain technology, but if you throw in some action to improve the world, you’ll have my attention!

Senzu World ticks two of those boxes and hopefully, when I see more gameplay, it might tick all three. So, what is it and how is it doing good?

What is Senzu World?

Senzu World is a Play to Earn (P2E) adventure RPG with an open beta scheduled for Q3 2022 and is currently in closed beta. It is the official game of Senzu Seeds which centers around collecting and planting digital Senzu Trees along with questing and adventures.

However, by planting digital “NFTrees”, you are also helping to combat real-world deforestation and habitat loss. 20% of profits from both the NFT collection Senzu Seeds and from game transactions is donated to One Tree Planted. These sorts of projects are necessary for both aiding the growth of the sector, and also in countering lazy stereotypes about NFTs.

Senzu World will utilize Enjin’s Efinity Polkadot parachain which is in itself, eco-friendly, and could become one of the Enjin Adopter Program‘s flagship games as Senzu World plans some impressive gameplay additions. These include dungeons, community events, PvP tournaments, and world bosses.

The project is still in its early stages with not much to analyze quite yet, but the foundations are certainly interesting. The motivation for Senzu World appears to be “doing well by doing good”, which is worth supporting. In addition to this, the art style is appealing, the game has some lofty goals, and Enjin’s Adopter Program ought to facilitate its success.

2021 is nearly over (and I recommend our article on why 2022 will be an important year for blockchain gaming) but there are still a couple of things to look forward to. One is a new Play to Earn (P2E) game called NOA on the WAX blockchain which enters beta testing on 22nd December 2021.

What is NOA?

NOA is a trading card game, but not like others in the space. In fact, it falls deep within the DeFi sub-genre that brought blockchain gaming into the limelight. That is, it’s less “gaming” in the traditional sense, and more a new breed of DeFi activity, albeit an oddly satisfying and enjoyable one. The NOA devs refer to the game as an “idle card game” that is like mining, but with cards.

The premise of the game is simple, you build decks with a hero and support cards, and then you enter dungeons to fight. You earn loot in the form of NOA tokens and NFTs as you upgrade your arsenal. NOA’s summary of gameplay is:

“Build a deck of 16 hero cards and 10 support cards. When the game starts, 4 random hero cards are placed on the battlefield along with 2 random support cards. Your heroes will battle the enemy cards and every time a hero goes to 0HP, a new one emerges from the draw pile until all 16 are destroyed. The player that still has at least 1 hero card on the battlefield wins. You will receive NOA token as reward and if you are lucky, you will get some rare loot such as shards to upgrade your cards, in-game exclusive heroes, charms, boosters and more, a lot more!” — NOA

NOA is the essence of a Play to Earn, DeFi and blockchain gaming hybrid; some would call it GameFi, but this sub-genre that has put blockchain gaming on the map ought to have its own title. Games like NOA are feeling out the place blockchain games will have in the global economy by creating purpose-built games centered around earning. A new way to generate income through an imaginary job you enjoy. What a time to be alive, eh?

The beta launches this week and you can learn more about the game on the NOA website, their Twitter, or their Medium.

The blockchain gaming space is expanding in all directions, particularly in the second half of 2021. In 2018, I could scarcely track down enough interesting news, but in 2021, it’s scrolling down my screen like The Matrix.

There have been a number of subtle changes in blockchain gaming this year, but one has stood out from the rest and it’s crucial. That is, the caliber of people and companies either working on projects or investing in them. Three years ago, it was rare to see names you recognize; in 2021, there are projects with pages full of big players. One such project is Syn City.

What Is Syn City?

A lot of the fundamentals of Syn City are kept secret presently, which is partly why the game isn’t featuring in our Blockchain Gaming Watch series yet. However, I have ferreted around the internet and gathered what we know so far. Before I summarize that, I want to draw some attention to both the team behind Syn City and its investors.

Team and Investors

Firstly, the team behind this project is a smorgasbord of experience and talent. The two co-founders, Roy Liu and Mihai Pohontu, have high caliber experience at the likes of TRON, EA, and Disney. In fact, many of the major roles working on Syn City have worked at or with TRON Foundation in some capacity — a major player in the crypto space since 2017.

As for investors, you could reasonably argue that anybody could invest any amount and it doesn’t necessarily improve the chances of the game’s success, but nevertheless, there are some familiar names. In the crypto space, there is Kieran Warwick, co-founder of Illuvium, Paul Menchov, co-founder of CoinList, and Luke Wagman, co-founder of CoinMarkertCap. There are also many other familiar names like Alex Becker and Do Kwon.

Outside of crypto, there is AT&T Capital, Spartan Group, Justin Kan, co-founder of Twitch, and even the likes of YouTuber, KSI. It really is quite the backing they have acquired, in both financial standing and clout.

Key Information

  • Free to Play
  • Play to Earn
  • Will have its own token (TBA)
  • Cross-chain
  • Internal DAOs (MaaD) acting as crime syndicates
  • Will have DeFi staking
  • Release date TBC

Closing Thoughts

There isn’t enough on the table currently to make an informed decision about Syn City, but there are a number of aspects that excite me. On the surface, it has a strong team behind it who have a history of success. However, what interests me is the early shape of the fundamentals of the game. Syn City could be a seminal moment in gaming with novel utilization of blockchain technology in the form of Mafia-as-a-DAO (MaaD), which is a frankly brilliant idea. Mark our words, this is one to watch.

There is a litany of low-budget blockchain games in development, all jostling for attention. Then there are more substantial projects — ones like Guild of Guardians — that have forged an entire army of supporters without much in the way of gameplay footage.

I am ordinarily reticent to give too much coverage to games with little in the way of gameplay to show or experience, unless they are exceptional in other ways. Guild of Guardians doesn’t quite have enough on display to be eligible for Blockchain Gaming Watch quite yet, but it does have a number of feathers in its cap.

What Is Guild of Guardians?

Guild of Guardians is a mobile, multiplayer RPG using blockchain to enable much of the game’s contents to be NFTs, as well as the creation of their $GOG token. What solidified my interest in the project is that it is owned and published by Immutable, and that Layer 2 Ethereum solution is a platform I’m particularly optimistic about.

The game itself is shaping up nicely, and the Ukrainian studio behind it, Stepico, is certainly no bedroom start-up. What caught my eye, however, is the support this project has garnered; it’s quite incredible. Over 800,000 users registered for the CoinList sale, pre-registered players for the game exceeds 400,000, and they have — and this really takes the proverbial biscuit — over 110,000 members in the Discord at the time of writing this. Are they building a game or a breakaway society?!

Key Takeaways

  • Estimated “soft launch” Q1 2022
  • Uses Ethereum via Immutable X
  • $GOG just concluded ICO
  • Free to Play
  • Play to Earn
  • If its Discord were a nation it’d be more populous than Tonga

The post 2 Plots of Digital Land Have Sold for a Combined $4.8m This Week appeared first on Token Gamer.

NFT might be the Collins English Dictionary’s word of the year, but for blockchain gaming, I’d say it’s “land”. This time last year, I had barely seen the word land in a blockchain gaming context, yet now it’s right up there with staking.

This week has taken us on a wild ride, however, with two landmark sales, one in Axie Infinity and one in Decentraland. The latter strikes me as more of a corporate, marketing play, but the former appears to be just a wealthy player making an investment.

What Is a Land Plot in Axie Infinity?

As blockchain technology bridges the gap between the physical and the digital, we are beginning to see exclusively physical concepts recreated in digital terms. Now that we can own digital items, which is the driving force of the NFT movement, there was inevitably going to be a move towards virtual property and land ownership. Within any gaming world, the space can be divided up into plots and then sold, just as you would with real-life real estate.

Axie Infinity, the blockchain monster battling and breeding game that ignited interest this year, is based in the world, Lunacia. This game world is divided into a 301-by-301 grid, with each square representing a tokenized, and thus ownable, plot of land called Terra. These plots come in varying rarities and offer some benefits.

At a basic level, the plots can be bought, sold, and rented out. However, they are also customizable, can host shops, house NPCs, summon monsters, access dungeons, and offer content creators a number of opportunities. Therefore, they are seen as an investment above and beyond owning a scarce NFT in a highly popular blockchain game.

NFTs: Confusing Ageing Accountants Since 2017

As the title of this article suggests, there has been a sizeable purchase made for a plot of land in Axie Infinity. The land was sold for 550 Ethereum, which at the time of sale, is somewhere in the region of $2,300,000. The land is the rarest form, Genesis.

As I mentioned, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen digital land sell for Bugatti prices… this week. We have also just seen Metaverse Group buy a desirable and large plot of land in Decentraland for 616,000 $MANA, which was $2,430,000 at the time of purchase.

Final Thoughts

I find it difficult to square the price with the purchase at the moment. While getting land in a major and lasting blockchain game could prove a wise investment, many of the games we see now will likely be replaced unless they continue to build and innovate relentlessly. It makes more sense to me for a company like Metaverse Group to make a purchase of this caliber on the grounds of it being glorious PR as you bamboozle and irritate mainstream media.

It has been a wild week and it’s not even Friday yet. By Sunday I fully expect Zuckerberg to have bought a planet in Alien Worlds for $1.2 billion.

Splinterlands, a trading card game that straddles both the Hive and WAX blockchains, has been fighting for the top spot on the DappRadar Games charts by users and regularly holds the coveted position.

On the 8th December 2021, the Chaos Legion expansion lands for Splinterlands, and they have decided to spice that up with some additional news. Along with the release of Chaos Legion, there will also be Phase 2 of the pack sale, opening up another 2 million packs in the Splinterlands shop. While these packs are inexpensive insofar as they cost $4 or some of Splinterlands currencies, they will still require a voucher to purchase.

How Do You Get Vouchers in Splinterlands?

To get vouchers that enable you to purchase the packs for Chaos Legion during both phases of the pack presale, you will need to stake Splinterlands’ token, $SPS. This is done easily within Splinterlands by going into the shop. If you would like to calculate the rate at which you will earn vouchers, they have a calculator.

The Airdrop: Limited Edition Promo Card, Doctor Blight

“Doctor Blight is a Legendary Neutral Monster card that can fit into many different team compositions at only 4 Mana cost. In addition to his Magic attack he has almost all “blight”-related abilities in the game! He has Affliction which can prevent his targets from being able to be healed, Slow which reduces the speed of all enemy Monsters, Poison which causes his targets to take damage each round, Scavenger which allows him to gain strength whenever a Monster dies, and finally Weaken which reduces the health of all enemy Monsters.”

Splinterlands

As if the 8th December 2021 wasn’t significant enough for Splinterlands already, there is also going to be an airdrop of a limited edition card to certain accounts that participated in the presale. There is a 1 in 50 chance of receiving a Doctor Blight card when you buy a presale pack, and if you buy 50 packs, you are guaranteed it. There will also be a Gold Foil version which shares the same 2% chance, but for every Doctor Blight card received. So, around a 1 in 1,000 chance of getting a Gold Foil Doctor Blight from a pack. Like the previous guarantee, if one account purchases 1,000 packs, they’re guaranteed this card.

WAX is a blockchain that has been a leading force in blockchain gaming, with titles like Alien Worlds, Splinterlands, and Farmers World, to name a few. There have long been rumblings that WAX is going to be releasing some of its own games and now those rumblings have been confirmed.

WAX is already well established in blockchain gaming and the Binance Smart Chain has proven itself too, so this is a noteworthy collaboration.

What Is Blockchain Brawlers?

The announcement for Blockchain Brawlers is brand new and so details are a little sparse, but what we do know is highly encouraging. It is a Play to Earn (P2E) title revolving around NFT brawlers. The brawler NFTs will be available from 1pm ET on 30th November 2021 via auctions on Binance NFT.

There will be 100 different brawlers available in four different editions, including 1-of-1 Founder’s Edition examples. The four editions are Standard, Hardcore, Cage Match, and Death Match. Of the 400 NFTs available, there will be some extremely rare brawlers, such as the two Metaverse Champions.

Founder’s Edition Blockchain Brawlers will come with a profile picture (PFP) for your social feeds.

Release Phases

Phase 1: Binance & WAX NFT Auctions

From the 30th November 2021, auctions will begin for different brawlers.

Phase 2: NFT In-Game Item Pack Sale

Items of various rarities for your brawlers will be made available in NFT packs during a sale with a date TBC.

Phase 3: Beta Launch (Q1 2022)

In the first quarter of next year, the Blockchain Brawlers Beta will launch, allowing you to put your NFTs to use.

Phase 4: Binance Bridge to WAX Forged

The bridge between Binance NFT and WAX Cloud Wallets will open so players can transfer their brawlers to the WCW.

Play to Earn Functionality and BRWL Token

Phase 3 is of course the most exciting, with the beta opening. However, it will also bring with it the launch of the brand-new BRWL token, which will be earnable in-game.

Final Thoughts

This is an important collaboration for both parties; WAX for wider exposure of a leading blockchain, and Binance for raising awareness of their NFT marketplace. WAX is dominant in blockchain gaming and Binance is dominant as an exchange, so this is a significant partnership.

What takes the significance biscuit, however, is the coming bridge between Binance Smart Chain and WAX. Between BSC and WAX, they control the lion’s share of the top blockchain games by users. This will be the first chain to connect to WAX and will open up opportunities for dApps and cross-chain NFT trading.
