Please stand in front of the Worldcoin orb so it can comprehensively scan your eye. Human-being confirmed. Proceed. Mint One episode 73 gets dystopian.
Token Gamer and NFT Insider have decided to combine forces to launch a weekly podcast, Mint One (formerly WAX Lyrical). John Nichols of NFT Insider and I will discuss a new topic every week, as well as feature special guests. If there’s a topic you’d like us to cover, make sure you let us know through the Token Gamer Discord or Twitter, or the NFT Insider Discord or Twitter.
In the last episode, John and I discussed Ripple’s initial victory over the SEC. This week, we take a look at Worldcoin, its eye-scanning orbs, and why so many people are repulsed by the concept.
Mint One Podcast, Episode 73: WTF Is Worldcoin?
Look, there’s no sidestepping it: the idea of having a silver orb scan your eye so you can prove you’re human is dystopian. However, we shouldn’t throw everything out that makes us uncomfortable before we thoroughly explore it. When it comes to Worldcoin, I’m glad I explored it. If you can weather the initial disgust, you might find some interesting ideas, and some potentially necessary ones.
On the balance of things, I believe I’m more for Worldcoin than I am against it. I loathe the name (it reminds me of Ruja Ignatova’s Onecoin scam) and the Orb is an oddly creepy name too. I think that some of the ideas are a little off-base, like the token distribution and vague hinting of said token’s rising value. That said, with AI as strong as it is and the trajectory it is on, we do need a way of proving we’re human in the digital setting, and this does work.
