World Eternal Online, a AAA Blockchain Play to Earn MMORPG Is Announced

A new blockchain MMORPG project that draws upon the rich history of the genre and boasts some noteworthy investors, like Galaxy Interactive.

The worlds “blockchain” and “MMORPG” in the same sentence have my face pressed against the window like an impatient dog. There are some projects in development that fall into both categories, most notably Gala Games’ Mirandus. Now, we have another title in the mix that purports to be a AAA blockchain MMORPG: World Eternal Online.

What Is World Eternal Online?

It’s important to begin by highlighting that World Eternal Online (WEO) was officially announced mere days ago for the first time and information is sparse. I have collected everything written about the game by reputable sources so far, and it isn’t enough to warrant its inclusion in our Blockchain Gaming Watch series quite yet.

Before I list the key facts about the game, WEO is developed by Core Loop a new studio focused on making “the next generation of MMOs”. The team behind WEO has some decent experience under the belt, but what caught my eye most of all was that among their investors are Andreessen Horowitz and Galaxy Interactive. Many will be excited about the former of the two, but Galaxy Interactive is an organization that has interested us. They are a venture fund centered around blockchain gaming and they have accrued considerable investment.

Key Details

  • Blockchain MMORPG
  • Cross-platform
  • Free to play
  • Play to Earn (P2E)
  • Player-driven economy
  • Dynamic world
  • Large-scale PvP
  • Raid Bosses

The blockchain and release date have not been decided yet. Development began in September 2020 and Core Loop expects a pre-sale at some point in 2022.

Final Thoughts

There isn’t much else to add at this early stage. It’s an ambitious project that stems from the MMORPG genre’s rich heritage. Blockchain will revolutionize MMOs without the need for the overdevelopment of other game mechanics and it seems Core Loop is well aware of that.

While I would usually be a little more hesitant with my expectations of a game that has very little to show yet, WEO has financial backing from reputable sources who will expect returns. This is one to keep an eye on and as soon as I can offer a more in-depth look at World Eternal Online, I will.
