We might be in the frigid depths of a lengthy crypto winter, but plenty of web3 is building, growing, and improving, and gaming is a fundamental part of that. MetaMask Sidequest is a grants program for furthering that gaming component and the winners have been announced.
MetaMask Sidquest was set up in conjunction with our very own Blockchain Game Alliance (which we are proud members of), Animoca Brands, Game7 DAO, The Land Vault, and The Sandbox. The objective was to support those building games in web3 and after 3,000 applications, just six winners have been chosen.
Category 1: Explore New In-Game Economies
A game’s economy can make or break it, and it’s all too easy to break it. When a game economy is tokenized, however, both directions are even more extreme. We have seen incredible game economies that have sustained projects from early alpha clients to years in the future (Alien Worlds). Conversely, we have seen flawed economies detonate a game from a simple mistake (CryptoMines).
Winner 1: Chronos: Dawn of Time
A post-apocalyptic RPG with a hell of a lot going for it!
Winner 2: Soul Splicers
A P2E roguevania action sidescroller with great combat.
Category 2: Revolutionize In-Game Identity
One of the chief benefits of blockchain in gaming — and one that is far too often overlooked — is a persistent, cross-game identity. While (ironically) centralizing your gaming identity has many perks, one that appeals to me, in particular, is accountability. If you’re toxic, insufferable scum, you may be lugging that reputation around for some time, or you’ll have to start over!
Winner 1: NFTeams
A web3 sports league with over 10,000 teams competing every week.
Winner 2: Frogland
A metaverse for artists, creators, and builders. And you’re a frog.
Category 3: Supercharge Your Gameplay With NFTs
Making in-game items NFTs might seem innocuous, but it has the power to revolutionize gameplay; what was high risk, high reward before, now has you sweating and shaking. Why? You’ll own the reward and you can do what you want with it. And that’s just one dimension to NFTs in one particular genre of game!
Winner 1: Chains of the Eternals
An open-world MMORPG with an incredible art style.
Winner 2: Inverse
A 3D world for social virtual engagement for brands and communities.
Congratulations to the projects who won!
