Gods Unchained is one of the first blockchain gaming success stories and it is stronger than ever in 2023. Finally, we get to see the latest roadmap and what is to come in one of the most popular blockchain TCGs.
In 2018 I made a video and wrote an article on what blockchain games I thought had the best shot at success in 2019. One of them was Gods Unchained and they thankfully proved me right. Those new to Web3 gaming might be surprised to learn that Gods Unchained has been playable for nearly 5 years and has steadily improved in various areas.
In January 2021, Gods Unchained had an estimated weekly active playerbase of around 1,600. By January 2022, this was up to a whopping 80,000. We don’t have an official number of players in 2023 and it will have certainly fallen as the crypto winter took hold, but we can get a rough indication through DappRadar. In January 2021, there were 3,000 to 4,000 daily Unique Active Wallets (UAWs) interacting with the game. In May 2023, we’re looking at around 1,200 to 2,200 UAWs. So, a very rough estimate would be 30,000 to 50,000 weekly players. That is an impressive number indeed in Web3 gaming, I assure you!
The Gods Unchained 2023 Roadmap
The latest roadmap published in a recent blog post has a lot of talking points. There are some small quality-of-life changes, some cosmetic additions, and then some major updates. Here are some highlights:
Sealed Game Mode
This has been long-awaited by the Gods Unchained community. We will soon see the experimental addition of the Sealed game mode. For the uninitiated, Sealed is a game mode seen in several TCGs. Rather than fighting with your carefully constructed and curated deck, you are given a deck and you do not know what cards are in it. Although there is more RNG involved, it is impossible for the mode to be Pay-to-Win.
Content Creator Program
Gods Unchained are launching a new content creator program that will better reward the game’s creators, open up collaborations, new opportunities, and better exposure for what they create. Given a game’s community is its lifeblood, this is a great move.
Mobile Soft Launch
One of the best aspects of a TCG is that it can comfortably be played on any platform, including mobile or tablets. In fact, despite being a PC devotee, I prefer playing TCGs on my phone or tablet — it just works better. Gods Unchained has been running a pre-alpha of the mobile client on Android and expects a soft launch for all this year. Most interestingly, it seems that it will be available on both iOS and Android. This would have been impossible until recently, but Apple has been rowing back on their anti-NFT stance, though the 30% Apple Tax is still in place.
Gods Unchained is one of the most coherent and polished games in Web3 and a truly safe pair of hands. Usually calling something a “safe pair of hands” is a slight, but in the volatile, tumultuous world of Web3, it is the highest praise. Gods Unchained just keeps steadily improving, year-on-year.
