Those who listen to the Mint One podcast or have read more than one of my articles will know, I live for MMORPGs. There are a great many benefits to blockchain technology in gaming, but for me, MMOs represent some of the most exciting. Well, World Eternal Online is about to open its doors for the first time.
We’ve been thoroughly enjoying some of the early MMOs in Web3, particularly Big Time. However, there has been a project I have been keeping my eye on since Q4 last year: World Eternal Online. After the game officially announced in November 2021, there wasn’t a wealth of information to go on; there were some high-profile investors, some GIFs of gameplay, and a rough timeline. Now, we’re about to get a lot more.
What Is World Eternal Online?
To give an overview of what World Eternal Online aims to be, I will quote the introduction to the whitepaper:
World Eternal Online (WEO) is a new sandbox, play2earn MMORPG with a player-driven crafting economy. Players adventure across a vast world with thousands of other players, killing monsters, gathering resources and crafting items. Players can join a guild, take down massive raid bosses, capture a PvP fortress and more! Our goal is to make a fun game first where players can have a real impact. Players could potentially earn NFTs and tokens in-game by playing and interacting with others.
It’s undoubtedly an elaborate and ambitious project that is taking shape nicely, but until we have got our hands on it, there’s little else for us to add.
World Eternal Online Alpha Access
What is exciting us and many Web3 gamers is a blog post earlier this month announcing that the World Eternal Online Alpha is coming soon. I wanted to share this news, but I also wanted a little more of an indication of when “soon” might be, and now I think we have that.
We still can’t extract an official date for the opening of the alpha, but the above announcement in World Eternal Online’s Discord server suggests we’re looking at August. The whitelisting process is ending tomorrow (30th July 2022) and the first waves of alpha invites will be going out to accounts already whitelisted. You will receive a badge in your inventory on the official site which you can check for.
I would like to quickly draw your attention to one potential issue: World Eternal Online announced that when a lucky whitelisted user is selected the developers “will let them know over Discord”. With the influx of social scams, particularly on Discord around Web3, I encourage you to be vigilant. If you get a message, simply check your inventory on the website; do not click anything on Discord! I do wish games wouldn’t utilize Discord as much for contacting players directly.
Nevertheless, we’re about to get a look at genuine gameplay of one of the most anticipated MMORPGs currently in development in Web3 and I hope that we can bring you some content and perhaps even a stream of it!
