GDC 2023 was another blockbuster event for the games industry, but for arguably the first time, Web3 and blockchain played a significant role in proceedings.
Token Gamer and NFT Insider have decided to combine forces to launch a weekly podcast, Mint One (formerly WAX Lyrical). John Nichols of NFT Insider and I will discuss a new topic every week, as well as feature special guests. If there’s a topic you’d like us to cover, make sure you let us know through the Token Gamer Discord or Twitter, or the NFT Insider Discord or Twitter.
In last week’s episode, we did a recap of a crazy month in Web3. This week, we go through all of the news and happenings at GDC 2023!
Mint One Podcast, Episode 61: Web3 Gaming at GDC 2023
At Gamescom last summer, I realized just how prevalent blockchain is in the minds of major developers and studios. However, it still wasn’t public facing in most cases. GDC has demonstrated that in the last few years with only a small Web3 presence, but this year, something changed.
There are a lot of major announcements we cover in this episode, including the gargantuan Immutable X and Polygon partnership, the CCP Web3 game funding, and the Com2us Summoners War blockchain integration. However, there were many more subtle announcements that could be impactful, such as Nvidia’s Omniverse Suite which is made with metaverse content creation in mind.
As far as Web3 gaming goes, GDC 2023 has been the biggest by far and it highlights the momentum we’re gaining year-on-year. One can only imagine what sort of announcements we’ll see in the next few GDCs. It almost makes me want to tweet “WAGMI!”. Almost.
We’d like to ask that if you listen to us on Apple Podcasts and/or Spotify, you rate us five stars and leave us a review if you enjoy Mint One. This helps both our podcast and the blockchain gaming ecosystem as a whole!
