Web 3.0: Transforming Business Models for the Gaming Economy

On Monday 28th November 2022, Enter the Metaverse happened in London and the flagship panel of the two days was a conversation between me (Robert Baggs), co-founder of Token Gamer, Robby Yung, CEO of Animoca Brands, Sebastien Borget, co-founder of The Sandbox, and Tim Dierckxsens, CEO of Venly. Here is the video of that panel.

Enter the Metaverse by Tech Circus was a brilliant event; it wasn’t the largest or the most flashy, but the caliber of speakers (myself excluded) and attendees was almost unparalleled. There were some fascinating talks and panels and it was my pleasure to present the flagship talk, “Web 3.0: Transforming Business Models for the Gaming Economy” with some real metaverse A-listers.

For anyone confused at the intro, I was ushered on stage before the panelists had their mics on, so I had to just freestyle an intro for a few minutes — feel free to skip to 2:22 for the start of the panel.

The topic is one that interests many of us. Web3 is coming to revolutionize many industries, but the value blockchain technology brings to gaming makes it one of the most affected. The gaming economy has evolved rapidly in the past few decades and now it is a sector worth an estimated $220 billion in 2022 and is predicted to be on the back 9 of a trillion by 2030 ($583.69 billion). Yahoo Finance put gaming (making up the bulk of “entertainment software”) in as the 6th most profitable industry.

There are many ways that Web3 will be transformative to the gaming economy, from new business models (though hopefully not the money-centric Play-to-Earn model) to the enrichment of the Free-to-Play model that has seen such success. Then there is the birth of a sustainable and rewarding creator economy, improved esports, and much more.

On this panel, we tackle numerous difficult topics, so soak in the words of wisdom from three people who are fundamental in shaping how Web3 gaming plays out.
