A new game is interested in taking the P2E strategy game crown, however, and to celebrate their opening success, they have teamed up with the blockchain they are on — WAX — to give away 1,000,000 of the game’s native token, $XPS.

What Is Xpansion?

Xpansion is a decentralized 4x strategy game set in a sandbox environment and powered entirely by NFTs. The game has the familiar mechanics of land ownership, asset management, and resource-based economics. It also has player-versus-player (PvP) elements in which you can raid rivals’ lands for resources.

Xpansion is also following another interesting trend in blockchain gaming by becoming a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). This means the game will be run by the players and this dynamic has proven popular in the early stages of the sector.

Since the first time I looked into Gala (and thankfully bought $GALA too), they have stormed into the top 100 tokens and have seen widespread acclaim and interest. They have a number of interesting projects, including strategy games, tower defense, a MOBA, and several others, but what caught my eye was their upcoming MMO, Mirandus.

Mirandus VOX Drop, 6th December 2021

Gala Games has a number of strings to its bow. In September I remarked on how the Gala ecosystem is fleshing out in so many directions it’s difficult to narrow down what exactly they are trying to build. The obvious answer is a metaverse, but there’s extreme nuance within visions of metaverses, and Gala’s appears to be more comprehensive than most.

Part of said ecosystem is their VOX world in which you can use VOX avatars to earn currencies. The first set of VOX avatars was a drop inspired by their Town Star game. This drop is their second in the VOX series and will be themed on their MMO, Mirandus.

What is a VOX? “A VOX is a unique avatar with randomly generated traits. VOX are collectible ERC-721 NFTs. Each VOX is programmatically generated and provably unique, meaning that no two VOX will look the same.”

Another interesting element to these VOX avatars is that they will have utility inside the game inspiring the drop, in this case, Mirandus, as well as other Gala games. “When paired with its matching exemplar, Mirandus VOX extend the innate abilities of your exemplar. Think of Mirandus VOX as small but powerful lucky “charms” that give you a boost while playing the game. Non-humanoid creature VOX give your exemplar a bonus when fighting, looting or defending against that specific creature.”

There is only one disappointing downside to this drop and it’s a real bone of contention for me. As the VOX are traditional ERC-721 NFTs, you will have to pay gas fees when you buy it from the Gala store. Gas fees have been astronomical of late and so that’s highly disappointing. Sadly, it gets worse: “You will need to pay gas fees twice. Once when purchasing your VOX box in the Gala Store and also when you ‘reveal’ your VOX by exchanging your box against the contract.”

Gala, I am a fan, an early investor, a believer, and an interested journalist. One gas fee at current prices borders unacceptable given the wealth of routes around them. Two gas fees is unconscionable. You’re pricing huge swathes of interested players out of participation.

Nevertheless, we love what Gala Games is building, their upcoming titles are some of the most promising in the industry, and the company is headed by someone I believe has the foresight to guide it to lasting significance.
