The Premier League Joins NFT Fantasy Sports Platform, Sorare

"While the NBA, La Liga, and MLB are fantastic, the Premier League is the most-watched sports league. In the 2018-2019 season, the Premier League had over 3.2 billion people watch it. So, while this was an expensive partnership for Sorare, I suspect it will pay dividends for onboarding users, which is a victory for Web3 too."

Sorare is the leading NFT fantasy sports platform, partnering with the likes of La Liga, the NBA, and Major League Baseball. For some time, rumors of the English Premier League partnering with Sorare had floated around, but now it’s live and playable!

In November 2022, reports began circulating that a deal between Sorare and the Premier League was finally done and was estimated to be worth $34.5m per season. In a recent Medium article, Sorare announced the partnership officially and launched their Premier League fantasy football.

The way that supporters follow their favourite teams and players is evolving and the Premier League is always looking for ways to engage with fans … Sorare’s digital cards and innovative online game represent a new way for them to feel closer to the Premier League whether they are watching in the stadium or from around the world. We believe that Sorare are the ideal partner for the Premier League and we look forward to working closely together.

— Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the Premier League

As someone who has played several football fantasy leagues for well over a decade — including the official Premier League’s since about 2006 — I’m thrilled to see Sorare snag this partnership. In fact, I’ve already signed up and assembled my team. But, it’s bigger than that.

Casual gaming is shrugged off by more traditional gamers, but in the business sense of gaming, it is of titanic importance. Mobile gaming makes up the bulk of casual gaming, but we have seen social media platforms onboard the most unlikely demographics into gaming; think Facebook, Candy Crush, and the over 50s.

Fantasy football — really all fantasy sports — appeal to a wide selection of people, including those who have no interest in other games. In the various leagues I’m in for fantasy football, I am playing against more non-gamer friends than I am with traditional gamers like me.

Sorare is one of the leading forces in onboarding users into Web3 games and this latest partnership is significant. While the NBA, La Liga, and MLB are fantastic, the Premier League is the most-watched sports league. In the 2018-2019 season, the Premier League had over 3.2 billion people watch it. So, while this was an expensive partnership for Sorare, I suspect it will pay dividends for onboarding users, which is a victory for Web3 too.
