MatchboxDAO has just completed a $7.5 million funding round, with some high-profile investors like BITKRAFt. So, what is it, and why are we pleased it is getting the right backing?
There is a problem we have given a lot of time and words to: onboarding. When most people think of onboarding, they think of the process newcomers have to go through to engage with elements of crypto and Web3. However, there is another type of onboarding that has begun to get some of the attention it needs: developers.
At present, creating a game that utilizes blockchain is not easy. Picking an ecosystem and blockchain is difficult, then comes the headache of whether or not it has an SDK, how strong that SDK is, and so many similar problems. In fact, overcoming problems is a lot of what the first few waves of Web3 developers have had to do. However, these solutions and resources are often, to quote MatchboxDAO, “siloed” and teams are often having to build near-identical tools. This not only bottlenecks development, but it squarely deters large publishers.

MatchboxDAO is an on-chain community of game developers that intend to pool their knowledge, solutions, and tools to enable an easier journey in creating games that utilize NFTs and blockchain. The best way to understand what MatchboxDAO aims to do is by reading their proposed solution to the problems Web3 game developers are experiencing:
We help game developers use the blockchain to produce novel experiences for their communities. To do so, we foster an ecosystem of builders passionate about gaming. We create technical infrastructure, produce written content, and engage in discourse. We provide grants and mentorship allowing contributors to create on-chain games without financial concerns or contractual obligations.
We promote building on the StarkNet ecosystem, a permissionless decentralized ZK-Rollup on Ethereum.
Blockchain gaming is in dire need of infrastructure. I know that there are people working hard on these problems — including some titans — but even in the biggest cases, they’re utilizing the experience of people, companies, and communities already established in Web3. This is why I’m so openly supportive of MatchboxDAO: they recognize that the most effective path for solving the infrastructure problem of blockchain game development, is collaboration.
