Leading Web3 TCG, Gods Unchained, Listed on Epic Games Store

"Gods Unchained, at the heart of it, is an excellent TCG that deserves a bigger playerbase. This announcement could mark the start of an influx of new players and even has the potential to demonstrate the value of true card ownership to the skeptics."

One of Immutable’s flagship games and one of the leading web3 games currently playable, Gods Unchained, has now been listed on the Epic Games Store, opening it up to an enormous pool of new players.

It wouldn’t be an article on Gods Unchained if I didn’t mention how long we’ve been supporting this project, but in doing so, every victory of theirs, feels like a small victory of ours. In 2018, I created some content on the best blockchain games to watch. There were not many options, and my list was hit and miss — some are still going, some folded entirely — but the biggest hit was undoubtedly Gods Unchained. Even in the early alpha builds, it felt like a strong game with a lot of potential.

The difficulty for any game, web3 or otherwise, is player acquisition. With fantastic game development tools available to everyone, including Unreal Engine 5 which has made AAA-standard games in reach without knowing how to code, the bar is high. In 1995, I might have popped into GameStop and looked at the charts, but my options were fewer than 100 games at any one time, now there are over 50,000 games on Steam alone.

In web3, the pool of players is smaller than in traditional gaming because of the polarizing nature of NFTs, albeit the ferocity is waning. Epic Games Store has embraced blockchain technology and the company’s co-founder and CEO, Tim Sweeney, is an advocate of the technology (I would implore you to watch his keynote speech here.) There is already a decent selection of web3 games on the platform, and now Gods Unchained has joined the ranks.

It is hard to overestimate the significance of Gods Unchained’s launch on Epic Games Store, one of the largest PC gaming platforms in the world […] We are extremely excited to present our game to a completely new and truly massive audience of traditional PC gamers and TCG enthusiasts. It is a natural continuation of our journey and makes good on our promise to our community to continue to bring Gods Unchained to a new and diverse player base.

— Daniel Paez, Executive Producer of Gods Unchained

The Epic Games Store has over 230 million PC users globally, which is a staggering number of potential players for any game. Gods Unchained is also in a fantastic state to be listed. While many games angle for a listing as part of a marketing tactic (which, don’t get me wrong, is a benefit here too,) Gods Unchained has been iterating on the game for five years and recently updated their roadmap, which includes a new Sealed game mode, a content creator program, and a soft launch to mobile.

Gods Unchained, at the heart of it, is an excellent TCG that deserves a bigger playerbase. This announcement could mark the start of an influx of new players and even has the potential to demonstrate the value of true card ownership to the skeptics.
