Back in October of last year, you might remember Steam banned all NFTs and crypto from its platform, meaning Web3 developers couldn’t take the traditional route that so many games before them had. With no centralized hub, it was up to the developers to create not only their games, but the marketplaces/store surrounding them.
Within a day or two of the announcement, Epic Games said they would welcome these blockchain games on their store. Fast forward eight months, and Epic Games is making good on its promise, with the first game Grit, developed by none other than Gala Games.
Although we don’t know exactly when Grit will go live, you can already find its page on the Epic Games Store here.
There is so much to like about this partnership, and it signifies an important step for the future of gaming. For one, Epic Games is a big player in the space, and their involvement in crypto gaming gives an incredible amount of exposure. You likely already know, but in case you don’t, Epic Games is the studio behind Fortnite, Gears of War, Infinity Blade, and numerous other titles, as well as the game development tool Unreal Engine. To say they are a big player may be an understatement.
If even a small percentage of their current player base is curious enough about this partnership to look into crypto gaming, it would be a huge win. To add fuel to that fire, the studio behind Grit is Gala Games, a blockchain gaming company who are producing numerous games, and has big plans for blockchain gaming. You might remember them from my recent article here detailing what they are involved in. This being the first game from them hosted on the Epic Games Store is promising because it could mean a whole pipeline of blockchain games is on the way as well.
So what exactly is this new game, Grit? Grit is a Battle Royale game, based in the Wild West, which makes it fitting for it to be hosted on the Epic Game Store alongside Fortnite. There are reportedly over 400 gun variations in-game to choose from to defeat your enemies, as well as multiple different game modes to conquer. The game will be free to play on PC. There is not too much information about it out yet, but it looks to be a fun new game to test out!
