A Beginners Guide to Web3 in 2023: Mint One Episode 81

There has been an uptick of interest in web3, which could be for a multitude of reasons. One thing’s for sure, though: web3 is as confusing as ever for newcomers. Let’s fix that. Here’s a beginners guide to web3.

Robert Baggs and John Nicholls have decided to combine forces to launch the weekly Mint One Podcast. Each week they will discuss a new topic around web3, as well as feature special guests from all corners of the industry. If there’s a topic you’d like us to cover, make sure you let us know through the Token Gamer Discord or Twitter, or Mint One Twitter.

In last week’s episode, John opened up about leaving AtomicHub after two years. This week, we’re swapping goodbyes for hellos and offering a 2023 beginners guide to web3.

Beginners Guide to Web3 in 2023

Since I joined the web3 space — before web3 was regularly used as a term — there have been enormous strides taken to improve many areas. When most talked of the problem of mainstream adoption, before we had seen any major partnerships, the agreed hurdle causing us the most issues was onboarding.

From a technical standpoint, we have made some real headway with onboarding. Where once it was extremely clunky, confusing, and sometimes dangerous to interact with blockchain games and dapps, now it is often quick and painless. We still have a way to go, but the user experience is worlds apart from 2018, for instance.

From an intellectual standpoint, however, I would argue we’ve not made much progress. If someone has no knowledge of web3 and crypto outside of “Bitcoin exists”, entering the space can be difficult, daunting, and fragmented. For an industry that was once dreamed of as a garden without walls, completely transparent, and borderless, can be pretty damned siloed, deceptive, and having an experience that varies from country to country. Not all of this can be fairly put on the shoulders of web3, but that makes little difference to the newbie poking their head around the door for the first time.

In this episode, John and I give a brief and casual beginners guide to web3 in 2023, what to look out for, what the current state of different areas are, and offer some helpful tips.
